When on any vacation, food costs are probably the third largest item in your budget after flight and accommodation. Hawaii vacation is not an exception. Hawaii food cost can easily run $40-$50 per person/ per day. But there are several things that you can do to reduce the cost of Hawaii food in your vacation budget.

Here are 5 ways to save on food during Hawaii vacation:

1. Book Breakfast Included option. The most obvious first thing one can do is to think about food expenses beforehand and try to combine some of the costs with the cost of accommodation. You can do it by booking accommodation, where the breakfast is included and possibly even some refreshments like tea, coffee, cookies, and fruits. That can be a room in a hotel where continental breakfast is included, or bed and breakfast where the host is kind enough to provide you with breakfast and refreshments.

Savings: ($5-$10  per person/ per day on breakfast and refreshments)

2. Get the room with the kitchenette. Booking the room, condo or other accommodation with kitchenette may substantially reduce the cost of food on Hawaii vacation. It is particularly true for the family of 3 and bigger.  You can cook something easy and feed the whole family for a fraction of the cost of restaurant meal. Even refrigerator in the room will help you to reduce the cost, as you will have the opportunity to save the restaurant leftovers and store milk, deli meats and cheese for quick inexpensive lunch. It is a great option if you don’t mind cooking on your vacation.

Savings: (final savings will be $25-$35 per person/per day, would still require groceries of around $15 per person per day)

3. Use coupons and deal vouchers to reduce bill at the restaurant. If you are against cooking on your vacation, make sure that you use the coupons and deal vouchers for your lunches and dinners during your Hawaii trip. Check the daily deals sites, and follow hawaiicheapvacations.net updates on the best deals. Entertainment coupon book usually contains great savings coupons of 25% to 50% off the selected restaurants on Oahu, Maui and other islands. There are some online printable coupons available as well.

Savings: (25%-50% off restaurant bills)

4. Combine activates with the meals. Great way to reduce the cost of food on vacation is to combine it with activities that you are planning to do on the island. It is awesome to combine cultural, education and entertainment experiences with your meals. Excellent option is a Hawaiian luau – great cultural experience and opportunity to save on dinner, while still enjoying the local cuisine. Another way is to get lunch included option for the Island Circle tour or the snorkeling cruise. However, check the price difference first. Sometimes, the meal included option is $20-$30 more than the same activity less the food.

Savings: ($10-$15 per person/per day of combining activity and meal).

5.Choose budget friendly restaurants or “skip a meal”.

Don’t forget that McDonald’s and Subway are there in Hawaii also. Get some meals at budget friendly places to save on your food. You can also “skip a meal” on some days of your trip. For example, skip lunch while on the trip or at the beach by substituting it with a fruit or a cup of coffee with the snack, or other nibble.

Savings: 5-15$ per person/per day.

You can achieve greater saving by combining some of this savings. For example, get the hotel room with kitchenette and breakfast included, skip lunch, cook your meals, and combine occasional dinner outside with a cultural experience like luau and you will save substantially on your Hawaii food cost.
